- 1. INTRODUCTION
-
- Football Fanatic is text based soccer manager simulation. Our
- premise is European teams have band together to form a European Super
- League. The league consists of 4 divisions with 16 teams. You play a
- 30 game/32 week regular season, with a 18 week off season. There are
- 4 cups. The top three regular season finishers are promoted to the
- next division except for the first division, and the bottom three are
- relegated. Relegation from the fourth division leads to your
- termination. For more information on playing the game please consult
- the manual (manual.txt).
-
- 2. RUNNING FOOTBALL FANATIC
-
- Football Fanatic is a DOS game and should be run in a DOS environment.
- Playing it in a simple DOS session (OS/2, Win 95/NT) should be fine,
- but we recommend you exit to DOS and play it in "pure" DOS.
-
- Footy can be played on many different operating systems. One of the
- following operating systems is required: DOS (Novell/DR DOS, PC-DOS,
- or MS-DOS), Windows 3.0/3.1, OS/2, or Windows 95/NT.
-
- Footy requires - 2 Megs of RAM
- - 2 Megs of Hard Disk Space
- - 386 or better processor (286 not recommended)
- - CGA,EGA or VGA graphics card
-
-
- 3. NOTES
-
- 3.1 MISSING PARTS
-
- In developing Football Fanatic we came across many problems. The
- biggest hurdle was the game match engine. We originally had some
- elaborate plans for it, but as we progressed we had to leave some
- things out.
-
- One thing we had to leave out was the option to change tactical
- options while the match was in progress. The user has an unfair
- advantage over the computer team as it tries to adapt to your changes.
-
- The possession percentage was something we decided to remove from
- the game. After looking at our compilation of various match reports
- from all over the globe, we decided that the possession percentage was
- misleading and not very practical.
-
- The third part in the game engine that you might notice is missing
- is that computer teams will not substitute during extra time.
-
- One minor thing that was left out in the game is the flag for
- Cyprus in the team selection option. We apologize to all Cypriots,
- but we could not come up with a decent ASCII representation of
- the flag. We will try to have a nice looking one when we update
- the data file. There are some other European flags missing but
- that was because the current data file did not include any teams
- from those countries.
-
- 3.2 BUGS
-
- We like to start out saying that the version that you have received
- has been extensively tested, and virtually all extremes have been
- taken in consideration since the start of the game. As with any other
- game we suggest you save your game periodically.
-
- No software is 100% bug free (see Windows 95). Some bugs were
- impossible to eradicate because they happened so infrequently.
-
- One bug is player duplication. Although it rarely happens a team
- may clone one of their players. We initially had a purging function
- that would check for and remove clones, but found it would make the
- game quite slow on lower-end systems. This will not crash or hang
- the game in any way.
-
- The game match engine, the most complex section of the game, may
- occasionally hang on you. We encountered an increase in game-freezes
- with the current data file because of the number of international
- players. This causes havoc with cpu team substitutions as they
- desperately try to field only the maximum number of allowed
- internationals. The matter is complicated in cup games where
- cup-tied players create problems.
-
- The "V-key" option in the reserve/main squad option may on occasion
- stall or crash the game.
-
- If you buy ALL the players from the transfer market the game will
- crash. So don't. Leave at least one player and return there the
- following week.
-
- The page up/down keys in the "View teams" option sometimes may stop
- working. This does not crash the game. The arrow keys and ESC keys
- will still respond.
-
- There were reports that the "While Playing" stats for the player was
- showing incorrect information. After some extensive testing we
- believe this error has been repaired.
-
-
- 3.3 ODDITIES
-
- There are some things that may seem odd. We hope we can clear a few
- things up.
-
-
- When selecting your team at the start of the game you may notice that
- some teams may have players who are 77 years old. This means we were
- unable to confirm their birth dates and their ages were generated
- randomly.
-
- Some players might have skill values over 100. This will not cause
- any problems with the game.
-
- When you have the "Quick Game Results" turned on and your goalkeeper
- is sent off during the match, a substitute keeper will play the
- remainder of the game if available (taking the place of a player on
- your squad).
-
-
- When you play a friendly if the 16th off-season week, it is thrown
- in together with the World Club Cup game. Your game is played
- first.
-
- There may be some high scoring game in the Serie D. After examining
- countless game results from lower leagues, we discovered lower leagues
- have higher scoring games. Footy reflects this.
-
-
- The all-star teams or top 5 lists in the Statscentre are updated every
- four weeks. They may become outdated as players are transferred.
-
- You may find the approach to do formation changes odd. This was the
- most practical way we could think of limiting the number of changes
- done in match. You can change formation twice in the first half, once
- in the second and if there is extra-time to be played, once more.
-
- A newspaper headlines might read that a team is chasing the
- championship when they are chasing a division title in the lower
- divisions.
-
- When your scout finds a mystery player, and you don't sign him before
- he leaves, he will just disappear. Rejection was too much to bear and
- he will drink his woes away. We suggest when an amazing player
- appears try to sell anyone in order to obtain the money. He may stay
- around anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks.
-
-
- 3.4 ADDITIONS
-
- One thing we added that wasn't mentioned in the beta versions or in
- the current shareware version is inflation. Prices, revenues and so
- on will increase as the game progresses. By season 35 you could be
- paying 2 or 3 times as much for a player.
-
- ALT-C in the main squad screen will randomly assign a name to the
- player (according to his nationality).
-
- Pressing T on the Main Squad screen will transfer list or unlist
- a player.
-
-
- 4. CHEATS & EASTER EGGS
-
- There are two cheats in the game. Keep in mind that if you use
- the cheat you will forfeit your season 35 summary file (see
- section 5).
-
- CHEATS
-
- In the main squad screen press ALT-0 to maximize the selected
- player's skills.
-
- In the finance screen press ALT-0 for extra money.
-
-
- EASTER EGGS
-
- Press the backspace key in the hall-of-fame to see the hall-of-shame,
- -- all the teams that were relegated.
-
- Press the "I" key while viewing the roster of other teams. It will
- show you their contract lengths, player's status, nationality and
- cup stats.
-
- When selecting a team press ALT-0 to manage the hidden team "Red
- Shirts". A little shout out to past and present Red Shirts.
-
- When selecting a team press ALT-9 to field an international team.
- Keep in mind when doing that, all players in the EFL who share the
- same nationality as your team no longer are considered
- internationals.
-
- In the registration screen, stay in that option for a few minutes to
- see a silly little Pac-Man character moving around.
-
- There are seven super-players that may try to join your team during
- your career. You've probably met "M van Basten" already.
-
- There are six top-class players waiting for you all over the globe.
- Let the world scout do some searching.
-
- Pressing ALT-T at the main menu will display the time. Press ALT-T
- to turn it off.
-
- Pressing "H" in the formation screen will display the formation which will
- field the most skilled players.
-
-
- 5. SUMMARY FILE
-
- When you finish playing your 35th season, the game will create
- a file containing your essential accomplishments.
-
- You will asked for your real name and then the SUMMARY.REC file is
- created. If you feel that you have quite well during your 35
- seasons you can send us that file. We will use it to create a top 10
- list in various categories, such as most championships won, most EFL
- final appearances, etc. At this time we are still working on that
- section so check our website at www.thunderbear.com in the near future
- for more details.
-
- Keep in mind that if you use any of the cheats, this file will not
- be created since it would give you an unfair advantage.
-
-
- 6. TECHNICAL NOTES
-
- Football Fanatic is not a very fussy game, but there are some things
- you can do to make the game perform reliably.
-
-
- 1. We suggest you use some sort of disk-cache such as Smartdrive
- or Norton Cache. Consult your documentation for more details.
-
-
-
- 2. On slower systems a BIOS video utility can improve display
- refreshes significantly. Utilities such as those are QCRT, ViZ or
- BIOSPEED. Check shareware collections.
-
-
-
- 3. If you are running Footy on a 2 Meg system and are encountering
- problems when starting the game you may to reduce the memory
- requirements of Footy with the following options:
-
- "FF memlow" - can handle data files with up 164 teams total
- "FF verylow" - can handle data file with up to 114 teams total
-
- To edit the data files consult the FFEDIT.DOC file.
-
-
-
- 4. We suggest that enable your numerical co-processor if you have
- it disabled.
-
-
-
- 5. The game may hang at start-up on Pentium Pro systems. It so
- happens that your computer is just too fast. Either use a
- slow-down utility or run Footy in Windows (3.1, 95 or NT) while also
- having large application running in the background.
-
-
-
- 6. There are have been reports of problems on systems with more than
- 32 Megs of memory. We suggest you run Footy from Windows
- (3.1, 95 or NT).
-
-
-
- 7. On some older 286 or 386 systems you may have to have run
- DMPIINST.EXE before playing Footy.
-
-
-
- 8. On some systems using expanded memory with QEMM the game may
- run very slowly. We suggest you disable expanded memory option and
- extended memory or run the game with no memory manager installed.
-
-
-
- 9. Do not run more than one copy of Football Fanatic from the same
- directory in a multi-tasking system.
-
-
-
- 7. LEGAL STUFF
-
- Please do not give away or distribute the registered version of
- Football Fanatic.
- We're not going to give you a sermon about piracy. We trust your
- judgement and hope you respect us and/or our work enough to make
- the right decision.
-
- We worked very hard to create this game and we're not asking for the
- moon. The game is very affordable, and unlike other games you don't
- have to pay anything for updates.
